Ted Ankrum’s Letter to the Statesman (2006 CD10 Democratic Candidate)

As Mr. McCaul’s Democratic Party opponent in the 2006 election, I disagree with your piece. In particular, shortly after the Baker-Hamilton Report was issued, Mr. McCaul specifically rejected one of the most useful recommendations–the part urging Diplomatic negotiations with Syria and Iran in his weekly e-mail “McCaul Minute”. As to his “solid 55%”, this was the lowest winning margin of any incumbent Representative in Texas, and came after he outspent me 10:1 and used the benefit of incumbency to go around the District in the week prior to voting distributing big-dollar grants to local institutions. We are now seeing news reports of how the White House Political Operations Office was telling Government agencies how to aid Republicans in the election. Also, please note that in Travis County, the Statesman’s prime readership area; I received 56% of the vote, the Libertarian 6%, and he received 39%. I was dismayed at the lack of news coverage of the 10th District race in ‘06. It now seems clear that Editorial bias affected your news coverage. I hope you do better in the ‘08 election.
