Susan’s Letter to the Statesman
I take issue with Rich Oppel’s characterization of Representative Michael McCaul as a moderate.
Someone who voted for warrantless wiretapping is not moderate. Someone who racks up a lifetime rating of 89.5% (96% in 2005, and 83% in 2006) from the American Conservative Union is not a moderate. Someone who receives a 91% rating from Americans for Tax Reform (Grover Nordquist) is not a moderate. A perfect 100% anti-choice record is not moderate.
The proud history of Congressional District 10 has been shredded and gerrymandered to accommodate a Republican agenda, and Mr. McCaul is in lock-step with it. What does it matter where his heart lies, if his votes betray it? Why should I care if he counts Democrats as people he admires, when he votes against raising the minimum wage, supports the PATRIOT Act, and denies us the chance to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices?
The 10th wealthiest member of Congress is out of touch with his constituents. He may be my Representative, but he does not represent me.
