Mike Aaron’s Letter to the Statesman
In Sunday’s paper, Rich Oppel praised Congressman McCaul for seeking a diplomatic solution to the Iraqi crisis. Mr. McCaul’s timing and message show a Congressman conforming to American opinion and adopting a centrist position after the mid-term elections. If Mr. Oppel is pointing to Mr. McCaul as a leader, I would counter that I see primarily following.
What strikes me more deeply, however, is that Mr. Oppel seems to be looking for reasons to praise Mr. McCaul, whose described actions do not appear particularly newsworthy. I see Mr. Oppel fortifying the Congressman for his next run, propping up his reputation which has been built on a determined lack of deviation from the Republican leadership.
The Statesman offers endorsements, and so must carry some semblance of objectivity. However, Mr. Oppel seems to have concluded, seventeen months early, that there will be no worthy candidates in Congressional District 10.
