John Lyon’s Letter to the Statesman

Mr. Oppel suggests in his editorial that Michael McCaul “is of a more moderate mold.”

I respectfully beg to differ; the Washington Post’s “Key Votes” database lists 24 votes. Representative McCaul voted with the Republican caucus on all but three, and on the flag burning amendment, he did not vote.

He voted to give “federal courts jurisdiction in the Terri Schiavo dispute.” He voted against repealing “restrictions on federal spending on embryonic stem cell research.” Voted to give tax breaks to oil and gas companies. Voted to support the “Secure Fence Act.” Voted against raising the minimum wage.

If he walks like a conservative, talks like a conservative, campaigns like a conservative and votes like a conservative, he’s not a moderate.
